A few days ago, I notice that the washing machine was more soapy. I infer that within the past few days the water has gone from hard to soft. The reason, I assume, is that our water is now being taken from the River Thames rather than the River Lea.
Reason? Thames Water have reported a strange taste and smell in tap water after complaints from customers in Walthamstow, near Coppermill Lane, home to reservoirs and treatment plants. Two chemicals used in making glue (2-EDD and 2-EMD) entered the River Lea and hence the drinking water.

But if the water in the Thames had gone soft wouldn't more boats be sinking
No. Boats float. Stones sink?
